Get Involved

Even though teens may have us believe otherwise, parents have the most important influence on their teenagers.  Virginia’s driving laws give parents a central role by requiring them to practice with their teenagers for a minimum of 40 hours and giving them the authority to withhold permission for a teen to get a license.

Even for experience drivers, driving is the most dangerous activity that we engage in daily.  However, driving is more hazardous for the inexperienced teenager.  At one of the most dangerous crossroads in a teenager’s life, many parents have inadequate information about how to help their teenager gain crucial driving skill and practice.

The Parents for Safe Teen Driving program helps school divisions provide awareness/training seminars for parents and their teens before the teens are issued licenses. At the meetings, parents get information about Virginia’s graduated licensing procedures, current driving techniques, how to teach a teen to drive, and more.
Approximately 43 school systems in Virginia have implemented successful programs that require or encourage parents (and, in most cases, their teenagers) to attend these seminars.  Parents praise the program stating that it is well worth staff time and effort.
