Partners for Safe Teen Driving

Partners for Safe Teen Driving is a program that enables school divisions and communities to give parents the information and tools they need to help their teens become safer drivers.  Partners for Safe Teen Driving is an economical, systematic, and easily implemented program.  It provides a step-by-step approach to school divisions to create a community partnership to implement an educational program for parents.  This is a community health initiative that involves all aspects of your community with the goal of preventing serious injuries and fatalities.

Approximately 41 school systems in Virginia have implemented successful programs that require or encourage parents (and, in most cases, their teenagers) to attend awareness/training seminars before their teens are issued licenses.  These counties have received positive parent feedback about the program and feel it is well worth staff time and effort. All of the information needed to being a parent awareness/training program is available on this web site. This information can and should be tailored to develop a safe teen driving program specific to your community.  The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, Virginia Department of Education, and Prince William County Public Schools have partnered to create the resources you need to begin a similar program.

All of the information you need to offer the awareness meetings and to get the funds necessary to print and copy the materials for parents and the community is included.  In addition, Doris Brown, formerly with Allstate Insurance Company and The Allstate Foundation, recently joined Prince William County Public Schools and Partners for Safe Teen Driving to assist individual school divisions across the state in developing and implementing safe teen driver programs.

Community funding may be obtained to help pay for the printing and production of folders, brochures, banners, bumper stickers, and other materials.  However, many school dividions have chosen to print materials in-house.

School divisions and communities that would like more information about starting a Safe Teen Driving program may call Prince William County Public Schools at (800) 609-2680 or Doris Brown at (540) 309-1359.  You are also invited to Prince William, Roanoke, or Stafford counties to attend a parent education seminar and see how it works.

Much is at stake!  The key to preventing teenage injuries and fatalities is to get the community, and especially parents, informed and involved.  We can’t afford to wait!
